Clean Beginnings: Mothers in Uganda Are Giving Birth Safely

This past week, we received news that filled our whole team with joy — and we couldn’t wait to share it with you.

Mothers in Uganda are now giving birth in a clean, safe clinic.

Where This Story Begins

At Burungira Health Centre in Bushenyi District, Uganda, giving birth used to be risky before clean water arrived. There were no taps, no running water, no way to wash hands or tools properly.

Midwives had to carry heavy jerry cans of water into the delivery room — during labour — just to help mothers deliver safely. Every birth began with a race for water.

Clean Water Has Arrived

Today, that has changed.

When you walk into the clinic now, you’ll see a clean tap right inside the delivery room. Water flows straight from a new gravity-fed system connected to a 5,000-litre tank that supplies the maternity and outpatient wards.

With clean water on-site, healthcare workers can wash their hands, clean equipment, and give every newborn the safe start they deserve.

“Clean Water Has Changed Everything”

Dr. Victor, who leads the clinic, shared these words that stayed with us:

“Clean water has changed everything. Mothers can give birth with dignity, and we can care for them without fear. Before, we used to pray the water would last long enough for one more mother. Now, I pray in gratitude — because it always does.”

What This Means for Families

Burungira Health Centre now sees around 40 safe deliveries every month — and because of your generosity, the work isn’t stopping here.
The next clean water system is already underway at Lamezia Health Centre, where around 120 mothers give birth every month.

From Fear to Joy

Clean water has turned:

  • Fear into relief
  • Exhaustion into laughter
  • Prayers for water into prayers of thanks

And it happened because people like you cared.

Thank you for helping moms give birth with dignity and safety — and for writing a new story of hope in Uganda.
